Thomasville
was founded over a hundred and fifty gears ago on the principle that
people were most important. This year, I have had the distinct
honor of representing a city that exhibits a love for it's people
and a dedication to making their lives more enriched. Although
I am not originally from Thomasville, I am honored to call it home
and to have been able to hold the title of Miss Thomasville, on this
year, my final chance to participate in the miss America Program.
A "transplanted" member of this community, I have marveled at the
way I have been embraced and invited into your government, places of
worship, civic organizations, schools and to other special events in
order to share my beliefs and convictions.
The journey to the Miss North Carolina
pageant was wonderful, for it employed the help of so many local
citizens that have now become my friends through the process.
Preparations for the state pageant were so rewarding, and I was
honored to hold the title of Miss Thomasville during that week in
Raleigh. Some did not know anything about Thomasville; I was
eager to share her many wonderful qualities with those around me.
However, some did know about Thomasville, even referring to her a
"the city with a Big Chair" during my Top Ten announcement.
Although I was only 2nd runner up to the
crown, I am still excited that I was able to share my newfound love
and respect for this city as well as one of her most valuable
programs, Communities in Schools (CIS). As my platform
commitment, I have had the privilege of spending a lot of my time
and efforts this year promoting the CIS program and all it does for
the children of Thomasville. Having worked beside the
Communities in Schools classroom, I have a unique vantage point to
watch the daily workings of this program in action. I now know
the importance of being a mentor to a child and how it can truly
make a difference in their lives.
If I could choose to leave my reign as Miss
Thomasville in any fashion, it would be by encouraging YOU to learn
more about Communities in Schools and to carefully consider how it
might benefit from your involvement. Ten years from now, no
one will be able to name Miss Thomasville 2004, and especially how
she places in the Miss North Carolina pageant. However, one
child's life may be a little better because you were inspired to
become a partner with Communities in Schools. No greater
investment can be made in our future and I can think of no way my
year could have been better spent!
May you be blessed this year and always.
Thank you for your kindness! I will always consider
Thomasville a place I can call home!
Yours Truly,
Erica Nicole Gurley
